Colonial life
Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company, based in Columbia, South Carolina (USA), was founded in 1937 and incorporated as Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company in 1939. The company was purchased in 1993 by Unum, and then eventually bought by Provident in 1999 (they merged to become UnumProvident, of which Colonial is a subsidiary). Currently, Colonial operates in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
Parent company Unum was originally formed from the merger of two competing insurance companies, Unum of Portland, Maine, and Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company of Chattanooga. They are currently based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Unum is the largest disability insurance company worldwide and provides employee benefits including disability insurance, critical illness insurance, long-term care insurance and life insurance.
